Getting Started
This guide walks you through setting up your account and placing your first trade on Katana Perps.
Deposit USDC
Before you can trade, you need to deposit USDC into the Katana Perps smart contract:
Click Deposit in the exchange interface.
Enter the amount of USDC you wish to deposit.
Approve the USDC transfer and confirm the transaction in your wallet.
Once confirmed on the Katana blockchain, your balance is available for trading immediately.
All positions on Katana Perps are collateralized in USDC. Make sure you have USDC on the Katana blockchain before depositing.
Place Your First Trade
Select a market — Choose the perpetual futures market you want to trade (e.g., BTC-USD, ETH-USD) from the market selector.
Choose your order type — For your first trade, a market order is the simplest option. It will execute immediately at the best available price.
Set the side — Select Buy / Long if you expect the price to go up, or Sell / Short if you expect it to go down.
Enter the quantity — Specify how much of the base asset you want to trade.
Review and confirm — Check the estimated fill price, fees, and margin impact, then confirm the order.
Your position will appear in the Positions panel once the trade executes.
Manage Your Position
Once you have an open position, you can:
Monitor PnL — Track your unrealized profit and loss in real time.
Set stop-loss and take-profit orders — Create conditional orders to automatically close your position at specific price levels for risk management.
Adjust position size — Add to your position with new orders or reduce it with reduce-only orders.
Close the position — Place an opposite-side order (sell to close a long, buy to close a short) or use a reduce-only order.
Key Concepts to Know
Cross-margin
All your positions share one collateral pool. Gains on one position can offset margin requirements on another.
Leverage
You can open positions larger than your deposited collateral. Higher leverage amplifies both profits and losses.
Funding payments
Every 8 hours, payments are exchanged between long and short holders to keep perpetual prices in line with spot. Check the funding rate before opening a position.
Liquidation
If your account equity falls below the maintenance margin requirement, your positions may be liquidated. Use stop-losses and monitor your margin ratio to avoid this.
Session keys
After initial wallet connection, Katana Perps uses session keys so you do not need to confirm every order in your wallet. See the [Session Keys](/session-keys) page for details.
